Evgeniy Dementiev was born in 1983 in Tayozhniy, Russia. Dementiev began skiing competitively in 2001 at the age of 18.

His relatively short career stands out for the two medals gained at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, with a gold in the men's 15 km + 15 km pursuit event and a silver in the men's 50 km freestyle mass start. Dementiev finished 0.8 seconds behind the winner Giorgio di Centa in the 50 km event, the closest margin of victory in Olympic history.

The current Olympic cross-country ski champion Dementiev proved to be competitive as early as 2003 when he won two medals at the Nordic skiing World Junior Championships with a gold in 10 km and a bronze in the 30 km. Dementiev has gained two 4x10 km medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a silver in 2007 and a bronze in 2005.

In 2003 he won two medals at the World Junior Nordic Skiing Championships, taking gold in the 10 km and bronze in the 30 km event. In addition to his two Olympic medals, Dementiev also took the bronze medal at the 2005 World Championship 4 x 10 km event.

After being accused of dope using decided to leave sport in August 2009.
